Central Queensland University
Overview
Central Queensland University (CQU) incorporates a network of nine campuses situated along the east coast of Australia and international operations extending into the Pacific and South East Asia.
The main biomedical science and biotechnology laboratories are located at the Rockhampton campus.
Competitive advantages
Biotechnology at CQU
Undergraduate and postgraduate biotechnology courses at CQU are provided by staff of the Schools of Chemical & Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Biological & Environmental Sciences.
Current research interests include cell biology, immunology and diseases of endangered native marsupials, pharmacology of diabetes, and utilizing various molecular genetics techniques for studying biodiversity of fish, corals and other invertebrates in the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
Much of the research conducted at CQU is supported within the University’s research centres.
The University also hosts an Institute for Sustainable Regional Development (ISRD) and four designated research centres for the sciences:
- Centre for Environmental Management;
- Centre for Social Science Research;
- Primary Industries Research Centre; and
- Centre for Railway Engineering.

Primary Industries Research Centre
Core capabilities
The Central Queensland region is home to a range of primary industry activities spanning the agricultural(horticulture, broad acre, grazing and beef), the extractive (coal and magnesite) and the processing (alumina smelting and bulk materials handling) industries.
The Primary Industries Research Centre (PIRC) conducts research activities that service these industries. As a region of climatic diversity, spanning tropical to temperate zones, it is home to dry rainforests, wetlands, scrublands and specialised flora. Research into the conservation of these flora in the face of development is of prime importance to the PIRC. The region represents one of untapped potential, with scope for objective research and development.
The PIRC has current biotechnology projects on minesite phyto-remediation, waste water processing & management, and automated spectroscopic methods for ascertaining fruit sweetness.
