Technology/IP
FABCOM® hybrid composting system
The FABCOM® system is a new and innovative way to process solid and semi-solid organic wastes on a large scale. The FABCOM® system combines the cost advantages of open aerobic cell composting systems with the process and environmental benefits of in-vessel composting systems, including low odour emission, improved pathogen destruction, no vermin or fly breeding problems. FABCOM® is protected by completed international patents.
The FABCOM® Hybrid Composting System is an innovative technology developed to process liquid and solid organic waste cost effectively and environmentally responsibly.
The distinguishing feature of the FABCOM® system is the use of specially designed modular Aerobic Cells™. The Aerobic Cells™ allow for optimum aeration and process control, while preventing odour emission, leachate generation, and access for vermin and insects. The FABCOM® system requires only a 250m buffer zone (WA).
Each Aerobic Cell™ can be designed to process up to 3000 m3 of material per annum, and a complete FABCOM® system can be designed to process 5,000 - 500,000 m3 per annum of organic wastes, ie. biosolids, green and food waste, and industrial sludges. The process is computer controlled and monitored. The processing conditions are optimised to ensure safe, high quality compost in a short process time with minimal environmental and health impact. The process does not require turning equipment. The compost quality can comply with the National Compost Quality Standard (AS 4454).
Features and Benefits of FABCOM®
The FABCOM® system offers the following unique benefits for processing organic wastes into soil conditioners or organic fertiliser:
- More economical than in-vessel systems
- Reduced processing time (4 weeks)
- Flexible plant capacity
- Low operational costs
- Computer controlled process
- Suitable for all putrescible waste
- Reliable and efficient
- Low odour emission
- Improved pathogen destruction
- No process leachate
- No vermin or fly breeding problems
- A quality final product
HUMICOM® Process
HUMICOM® process is an advanced patented process to convert organic waste into a high grade multifunctional soil fertiliser. By combining organic waste with unique compounds the soil fertilisers have improved nutrient and water retention, wettability and improved durability in soils resulting in significantly improved soil fertility over conventional methods.
The incorporation of organic materials into sandy soils acts on the soil’s physical, chemical and biological properties, which in turn can improve plant growth. Significant further improvements result from incorporating mineral compounds to compost material during the composting process, improvements in water retention and higher soil wettability.
Spartel holds the license to commercialise HUMICOM®, the process of combining mineral compounds with compost during the composting phase to improve the composting process and properties of the resulting product.
The HUMICOM® process can be used to create a soil amendment for many different applications. Some of the notable improvements and benefits this process provides compost are listed as follows:
Features and Benefits of HUMICOM®
Waste is classified to comply with the National Classification System. Each audit is tailored to the specific needs of the client for cost effectiveness. Characterisation of the waste is carried out to provide quantitative and qualitative information about the waste stream.
During the composting process
- reduced odour emission
- increased ammonium and phosphate adsorption
- reduced CO2 emission
- Organo-mineral compounds have pathogen suppressing properties due to the presence of natural antibiotics in the compost and microbial antagonisms where microbes suppress pathogenic microbes
Improved final product properties
- improved moisture retention and thus availability in sandy soils (compared to compost only)
- formation of organo-mineral complexes that greatly increase soil fertility and compost stability
- reduced compost solubility (by 90%)
- high Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)
- higher phosphate, potassium and trace element adsorption capacity
- increased compost stability (longer lasting impact)
- increased stability of humic and fulvic acids (humus component)
- reduced phosphate leaching
- increased soil wettability
This process will enable you to produce a greater quality compost produce which will provide added value to agriculture, turf farmers, land developers, horse farmers, nurseries and other outlets.
Contaminated soils
The process can also be applied to contaminated soils, including oils and heavy metals. The process will reduce the metal mobility and much reduce TCLP concentration to allow landfill disposal or reuse. It can also assist in reduction of PAH and phenolic compounds in soils through aiding bioremediation.
FABIO soil bioremediation
Many present and former industrial sites are contaminated with tar-derived wastes from different kinds of industries. This contamination and its adverse effects is one of the major problems that environmental engineering is facing today.
In situ biological degradation, or Bioremediation, is a waste management strategy for treatment of soils contaminated with hydrocarbons. Bioremediation, where applicable as a waste management strategy offers a number of advantages over conventional treatment techniques in terms of its environmental friendliness and costs.
The FABIOCOM® biosystem is a new and innovative approach to the biological remediation of contaminated soils. The FABIOCOM® system possesses two unique features:
- A specially designed removable cover, which prevents odours and vapour emissions, eliminates weather effects and allows controlled process conditions.
- Leachate circulation via a leachate pond.
Benefits of Bioremediation using the FABIOSYSTEM
- Rapid bioremediation due to improved process control
- Eliminates noxious gas emissions
- Improved occupational health and safety requirements by enclosing toxic material
- Leachate management
- Reduction of hydrocarbon contamination to comply with government environmental standards
- Permits disposal of contaminated soil in Class II landfill
The system in combination with METALOK® will also manage soils contaminated with heavy metals with both processes operating simultaneously.
BIOBOX®
The BIOBOX® is an on-site aerobic/anaerobic, in-vessel composting system for the rapid stabilisation of highly putrescible organic wastes. Each BIOBOX® has a 20m3 capacity and can convert food, septic wastes, food offal, industrial organic sludges and abattoir wastes.
