Overview
Protagonist Thereapeutics is an emerging biotechnology company that has a robust, validated drug discovery engine for developing small-molecule like therapeutic equivalents of macromolecular protein-based drugs. Many therapeutically-promising and clinically-validated targets are considered difficult, if not impossible, to modulate with small molecules and are serviced by such protein based drugs.
Protagonist provides new therapeutic solutions, with better delivery, safety and/or efficacy profiles, to these clinically validated drug targets.
Founded in 2001, a recent eight-figure investment by an international consortium has allowed Protagonist Therapeutics to advance its therapies to the clinical stage, while continuing to pursue new drug design and development opportunities.
Protein-protein interactions comprise a large class of pharmaceutical targets with significant therapeutic potential. Drugs for such targets are currently dominated by large macromolecular compounds such as the natural receptor, the natural ligand or monoclonal antibodies. These molecules are predominately delivered by injection and are costly to produce.
Many therapeutically-promising targets are considered difficult, if not impossible, to modulate with small molecules. Protagonist Therapeutics has developed a platform capable of designing and synthesizing novel small molecules that modulate such targets, with improved efficacy and delivery characteristics. Protagonist Therapeutics' approach is a powerful combination of four distinct capabilities, namely:
- a unique understanding of the important functional characteristics of protein surfaces that are shared between diverse proteins
- an innovative molecular design environment
- a large collection of proprietary drug-like structures
- synthetic methodologies to prepare arrays of compounds for biological screening.
This platform is the source of its novel and proprietary pipeline of potential medicines for highly-validated drug targets.
