ResMed
Overview

ResMed is a leading respiratory medical device manufacturer, specializing in products for the diagnosis and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and the treatment of respiratory insufficiency.
When ResMed was formed in 1989, its primary purpose was to commercialise a device for treating OSA. ResMed has developed a number of innovative products for OSA, including flow generators, diagnostic products, mask systems, headgear and other accessories.
Our products now include devices for treating respiratory insufficiency and for the treatment of Cheyne-Stokes breathing in patients with congestive heart failure. Our growth has been fuelled by geographic expansion, increased awareness of OSA as a significant health concern among physicians and patients, and our research and product development effort.
We employ over 1,300 people and sell our products in over 60 countries through a combination of wholly owned subsidiaries and independent distributors.
Competitive advantages
We are committed to ongoing innovation of products for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disordered breathing (SDB), and the treatment of respiratory insufficiency. We have been a leading innovator of products designed to more effectively treat apneas, increase patient comfort and encourage compliance with prescribed therapy.
Special expertise in:
- Non-invasive ventilatory patient interface research, design and manufacture.
- OSA auto-titrating and patient adaptive ventilatory algorithms/devices.
Approximately 14% of our employees (over 160) and over 7% of revenues are devoted to research and development activities. Our inventions are protected by over 500 granted and pending patents worldwide.
Partners
- National Stroke Association (USA): We have developed a strategic alliance with the National Stroke Association to increase awareness about the high prevalence of SDB in the stroke survivor population.
- American Heart Association: We are working closely with the Western Affiliates of the American Heart Association on a number of local programs to increase awareness and education about SDB. We are also in discussions with the national American Heart/American Stroke associations regarding national programs initially targeting clinicians on the impact of SDB on both heart disease and stroke patients, as well as its role in the development of hypertension, a major risk factor for both heart disease and stroke.
- National Sleep Foundation (USA): The National Sleep Foundation is a non profit organization dedicated to improving public health and safety by raising the level of awareness and education toward sleep related programs and research. We have been an active corporate partner and have supported the National Sleep Foundation for a number of years.
- Flaga hf, based in Iceland. We co-develop polysomnography and diagnostic products and we market Flaga’s products in the United States and selected other markets.
- MedCath, a national provider of cardiovascular services. The alliance will allow MedCath to offer SDB screening, diagnosis, and treatment in conjunction with services currently offered through the company’s cardiovascular diagnostic centres.
