Specific focus of company
NMI's focus is on improving confidence in measurement through provision of a suitable measurement infrastructure. The function of the NMI is to maintain and develop Australia's fundamental system and standards of measurement. In doing so, it provides traceability to international standards, underpinning all measurements used in trade and industry.
Core Business Definition
The NMI's services include chemical and biological analysis required by organisations to meet statutory and voluntary environmental obligations and analysis of raw and processed foods and beverages. NMI also undertakes contract research projects and programs to address client-specific measurement problems, to develop new measurement techniques and to improve the quality of measurement. In support of the Australian biotechnology industry, NMI maintains a Depository Authority for Microorganisms under the Budapest Treaty. Microorganisms must be deposited with such an authority prior to lodging a patent application involving the organism.

Technology/IP
Biological reference materials are one of the key requirements underpinning traceable, comparable measurement. Depositing a microorganism with one of the world's depository authorities is a prerequisite to lodging a patent application involving the organism. NMI supports Australian biotechnology industries that wish to protect their developments with internationally recognised patents by maintaining such a depository under the Budapest Treaty.
