Centre for Food and Genomic Medicine (CFGM)

Overview

The Centre for Food and Genomic Medicine

The Centre for Food and Genomic Medicine (CFGM) is a research cluster established to tackle the twin epidemics of diabetes and obesity, often known as “diabesity”. The Centre was established in early 2007 via a strategic investment of $4.5 million from the State Government f Western Australia, through the Department of Industry and Resources, and is a Centre of the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.

What makes the CFGM unique is the blend of scientific, clinical, agricultural and food technology researchers who are addressing this complex, multifaceted problem from various complementary angles.  The Centre aims to open the door to new diagnostic and prognostic tests, as well as developing alternative food additives that are healthy, novel, effective and affordable.

Key areas of research include:

  • The creation of new foods with the power to modulate appetite (particularly the lupin grain crop)
  • Identification of genes linked to obesity and metabolism changes
  • Clinical trials to actively determine the clinical benefits of these approaches
  • The identification of novel biomarkers of diabesity.

The Centre's seven flagship projects are being undertaken by a multidisciplinary team, from the member organisations

  • CSIRO Division of Plant Industry
  • Proteomics International Pty Ltd
  • The Univeristy of Western Australia
  • Curtin University of Technology
  • Murdoch University
